From SHEHU M Wamakko
Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has warned against the politicization of security matters, saying such attitudes could jeopardize ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the State.
Speaking in Silame Local Government Area during a condolence visit to communities affected by recent bandit attacks, the Governor described security as a sensitive issue that should be handled with care and patriotism.
“Security issues are very sensitive and fragile, and therefore must be handled with utmost care,” Aliyu said.
He cautioned those who use public commentary and political criticism to undermine government’s security efforts, stressing that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.
According to him, the State Government, in collaboration with security agencies, is working round the clock to tackle insecurity, adding that the results of these efforts are gradually becoming evident.
Aliyu also decried the activities of some residents who allegedly act as informants to bandits, thereby fueling insecurity in their localities.
He disclosed that a bill would soon be sent to the State House of Assembly to impose stiff penalties on anyone found guilty of aiding or abetting banditry.
The Governor called on citizens to support government’s initiatives by providing credible intelligence to security operatives, noting that the fight against banditry requires the active involvement of all stakeholders.
He further said his administration has continued to provide logistics and other forms of assistance to security agencies to boost their operations, assuring that the government will sustain its support until peace is fully restored.
During the visit to Silame, families of the thirty-three victims killed in the recent bandit attack were each given ₦2 million and five bags of rice. In total, ₦66 million and 165 bags of rice were distributed to the affected families.
