The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has hailed the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, for redefining government–media relations through his strategic investment in journalism capacity building and commitment to open governance.

Speaking at a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists in Sokoto, NUJ Chairman, Usman Mohammed Binji, described the minister’s support as a “visionary partnership” that strengthens democracy by empowering the media to operate with skill, integrity, and courage.

The workshop, themed “Investigative Journalism in the Digital Era,” trained 20 practicing journalists drawn from various media organizations across the state. It focused on equipping them with modern investigative tools, digital verification techniques, and strategies for responsible reporting in a fast-changing media environment.

Binji emphasized that the training reflects Minister Goronyo’s understanding that a well-trained press is a pillar of transparency, accountability, and national progress.

“By supporting this initiative, the minister is not just sponsoring a training — he is investing in the credibility of governance and the capacity of journalists to build a better society,” Binji said

He urged participants to embrace solution-driven journalism that unites communities, challenges corruption, and contributes to peace and sustainable development.

Chairman of the event, Associate Professor Muhammad Sajo Sanyinna of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, commended the NUJ leadership for its sustained commitment to professional development, noting that the initiative will help reposition the media in Sokoto as a credible driver of social change.

The NUJ Sokoto Council reaffirmed its commitment to building a responsible, ethical, and digitally competent press corps, pledging to continue fostering collaborations that advance public trust and good governance
