A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Rural Women and Youth Development (RUWOYD), has submitted a reviewed National Policy for Inclusive Education document for consideration and implementation in Sokoto state.
RUWOYD Executive Director, Mr Abudu Yusuf, led Organisation's officials to submit the document at the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on Thursday in Sokoto.
Yusuf said the document was a landmark achievement after months of strategic engagements with key education stakeholders from the state and outside.
He highlighted that the document was a product of National Policy focus to be domesticated and adopted by the state government for onward implementation to the benefit of students with special needs.
He explained that the document was arrived at after thorough consultations, considerations of cultural, religious and other social behaviors as well as state educational policies.
'' This achievement was made possible with the support from ActionAid Nigeria under the Breaking Barrier Project, and the Palladium Group through the SCALE Project.
'' All stakeholders were engaged on series of delebrations in Sokoto, Kebbi and FCT Abuja at different occasions, fine-tuning the document in order to suit Sokoto state needs.
Stakeholders included representatives of NGOs, community group members, civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders and government officials,'' he said.
Responding, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ladan Ala, described the reviewed document as a successful milestone in education system.
Ala, represented by the ministry's Director of Policy and Implementation, Alhaji Abdullahi Altine-Durbawa, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment on ensuring effective implementation of policy across the state.
'' Together, we are moving closer to achieving inclusive and equitable quality education for all children in Sokoto state, '' he said.
Correspondent reports that an inclusive education policy is a commitment to creating an education system where all students, regardless of background or ability, are welcomed, can participate, and achieve together in the same classroom.
It includes ;removing barriers like poverty or disability, ensuring all children have access to quality education, and providing flexible curricula and support systems for diverse needs.
The Implementation challenges often include inadequate funding, corruption, and a lack of trained personnel, but many countries are working to address these issues through updated policies, international partnerships, and improved infrastructure.
