NUJ Seeks Lawmaker's Support To Sensitize Students Against Fake News

The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has sought a partnership with the lawmaker representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency, Alhaji Abdulmalik Zubairu, to organize a two-day workshop for Mass Communication students on combating fake news.

The Council Chairman, Ibrahim Maizare, made the request during a courtesy visit to the Chairman, Lawmaker's Committee on Education, Hon. Adamu Muhammed, held on Tuesday in Gusau.

This was contained in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Gusau by the council secretary Ibrahim G. Ahmed. 

According to the statement, Maizare noted that the increasing activities of social media users—especially among the youth—have taken a new dimension that raises serious concern for stakeholders.

He explained that the rapid spread of fake news and misinformation, fueled by social media, has become a major challenge, making it necessary for the Union and other partners to develop mechanisms to tackle false information.

He added that with the prevailing insecurity in Zamfara State, Mass Communication students must be equipped with media literacy skills and practical journalism knowledge to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.

Maizare further emphasized the need to expose students to career opportunities in journalism for self-reliance, economic growth, and development.

He stated that this informed the Council’s decision to contribute its quota to building a peaceful society by empowering upcoming journalists with the skills to identify and combat fake news, as well as digital gender-based violence.

Responding, the Chairman Lawmaker's Committee on Education, Hon Adamu Muhammed, appreciated the visit and described the initiative as timely and wise.

He noted that the proposal aligns with the lawmaker’s vision, explaining that Alhaji Abdulmalik Zubairu is passionate about education and committed to ensuring a well-informed and empowered society. He assured that the request would receive due consideration.
