Sokoto Gov Reveals Key Strategies to Boost Revenue Generation, Enhance Transparency

The Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has revealed that his administration inherited a poor revenue generating system, characterized by a lack of transparency and accountability, noting that even the little monies generated were not properly remitted into the state's coffers.
He made the revelation while Speaking at the opening ceremony of this year's Faculty of Management Sciences conference, themed "Tax Reforms, Sectoral Implications, and Future Outlook: National and International Perspective."
The Governor explained that his administration is working tirelessly to revamp the revenue system, with a focus on enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficient resource management.
To achieve this, the government is implementing measures to block revenue leakages, sanitize the system, and ensure that all revenues generated are properly accounted for and utilized for the state's development.
He commended the organizers for choosing a timely and relevant topic, expressing hope that the conference would provide a platform for stakeholders to brainstorm and proffer solutions to the challenges facing the nation's revenue generation and tax systems. "I commend the organizers for the choice of topic, and I hope they will maintain the tempo," he said.
According to him, since coming on board, his administration has focused attention on the execution of laudable projects aimed at improving the socio-economic lives of the people, ensuring that the state's resources are utilized effectively and efficiently to drive development and prosperity for all citizens.
The Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Professor Bashir Garba,in his remarks,described Governor Ahmed Aliyu as a worthy alumnus of the institution, saying, "We are proud of Governor Ahmed Aliyu and many of our products who are good ambassadors of the university."
The Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Dauda Abdulsalam, highlighted the significance of the conference theme, stating that it directly addresses issues shaping the nation's economic direction.
He emphasized the importance of engaging with these issues with depth and clarity, adding that the conference provides a rare opportunity for policymakers, researchers, industry players, and students to reflect on evidence and consider pathways toward a fairer and more productive tax environment.
In a paper presented on the conference theme, Alhaji Aliyaa Ahmed Ibrahim noted that the 2025 Tax Reforms mark a transformative chapter in Nigeria's fiscal landscape.
According to him, the overhaul of existing legislation aims to modernize and simplify the country's tax system, enhancing revenue generation and promoting equity. "The new legislation consolidates over a dozen existing tax laws to streamline administration, enhance compliance, broaden the tax base, and ultimately increase government revenue," he explained.
In a goodwill message, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, represented by the District Head of Gagi, Umar Jabbi, offered a thoughtful perspective.
He stated that Nigeria's challenge lies not in tax reform, but in good leadership dedicated to proper resource management for the betterment of all.
The Sultan assured the gathering of their continued support and prayers for leaders across the federation to succeed.
At the end of the ceremony, an Award of Excellence was presented to the Governor by the Vice Chancellor on behalf of the faculty.
