SOSG to Renovate Kware Irrigation Scheme, Launches First Onion Cold Storage Facility
From Shehu M Wamakko
The Sokoto State Government has unveiled plans to renovate the Kware Irrigation Scheme as part of efforts to promote year-round agricultural activities across the state.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu announced this while laying the foundation for a new Onion Cold Storage Facility at Road Block, Moreh area of Sokoto. He said the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to expanding agricultural productivity and supporting rural farmers.
The governor disclosed that the contract for the renovation of Lugu Dam has already been awarded, with 40 percent mobilization fee released to the contractor to fast-track the project.
Governor Aliyu described the proposed Onion Cold Storage Facility—considered the first of its kind in Nigeria—as a strategic investment, noting that Sokoto remains the leading onion producer in the country. He added that the facility will ease farmers’ access to finance, reduce post-harvest losses, boost revenue generation, and create employment opportunities for youths and women.
He urged farmers to make proper use of the facility when completed, assuring them of government support if storage charges become too high.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Investment, Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated, Dr. Femi Ogunsende, said the project reflects the federal government’s commitment to strengthening the onion value chain nationwide. He commended the Sokoto State Government for its collaboration and vision to position the state as the onion hub of Africa.
Other speakers at the event included the representative of the Sultan and Magajin Rafin Sokoto, Rilwanu Bello; the State Commissioner of Commerce, Haruna Abbas Bashar; and the Managing Director of Mystrose Agro Commodities Limited, Mr. Babatunde Niran.
