Sokoto Intensifies Livestock Development to Tackle Insecurity, Boost Economy
From Shehu M Wamakko

The Sokoto State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen livestock development as a means of addressing rural insecurity, cattle rustling, and economic hardship in the state.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu stated this on Tuesday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a Comprehensive Livestock Service Centre in Huci Village, Wamakko Local Government Area.
The governor said the centre, when completed, would enhance animal productivity, reduce pressure on farmlands, and help restore hope to communities affected by banditry and cattle rustling.
He added that the initiative was part of the state government’s broader strategy to provide sustainable livelihoods for residents.

According to him, Sokoto State’s historic role as a major livestock hub in Nigeria places it in a strong position to drive economic growth through improved livestock and leather production and processing.
In his remarks, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Muktar Mashi, described the livestock sector as a critical contributor to food security, employment generation, poverty reduction, and national economic growth.

He explained that the establishment of the centre was informed by Sokoto State’s strategic importance in the livestock industry and would help bridge gaps along the livestock value chain.
The minister, who highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to livestock development, commended the Sokoto State Government for giving priority to the sector.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Livestock and Fisheries Development, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Wamakko, said the centre would provide veterinary services and animal breeding facilities, while strengthening linkages between livestock producers, processors, and marketers.

He called on members of the host community to take ownership of the project and protect the facility from vandalism upon completion.
