The Sokoto State Zakat and Endowment Agency (SOZEA) has on Monday, 12th January, 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware (FNPH), in a landmark move aimed at strengthening collaboration in the provision of mental healthcare services and social support for vulnerable persons across Sokoto State.
The historic agreement was formally signed under the leadership of the Chairman of SOZEA, who led the Agency’s management team to the signing ceremony. The partnership underscores SOZEA’s commitment to expanding the scope of zakat and endowment interventions beyond conventional welfare support to include specialized healthcare services, particularly mental health care.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of SOZEA Malam. Muhammad Lawal Maidoki (Sadaukin Sokoto) described the MoU as a strategic step towards addressing the growing need for mental health support among indigent patients and other vulnerable groups in the state. He emphasized that zakat and endowment resources, when properly coordinated with relevant institutions, can significantly improve access to quality healthcare services.
According to him, the collaboration with the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware will ensure that beneficiaries identified by SOZEA receive timely and professional mental health services, while also promoting awareness and advocacy on mental health issues within communities.
In his remarks, the management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware expressed appreciation to SOZEA for the initiative, describing the partnership as timely and impactful. The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to providing expert medical services, technical guidance, and institutional support to ensure the successful implementation of the MoU.
The signing ceremony was attended by Directors of various departments of the Sokoto State Zakat and Endowment Agency, alongside other senior staff of the Agency. Their presence underscored the institutional backing and seriousness attached to the agreement.
As part of the implementation framework of the MoU, an eight-member Monitoring Committee was inaugurated to oversee the execution, compliance, and sustainability of the agreement. The committee is expected to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective coordination between SOZEA and FNPH, while periodically reviewing progress and recommending improvements where necessary.
The establishment of the Monitoring Committee further reflects SOZEA’s commitment to good governance and effective service delivery, ensuring that the objectives of the MoU translate into tangible benefits for the people of Sokoto State.
The event concluded with goodwill messages from both parties, expressing optimism that the collaboration would set a model for future partnerships between social intervention agencies and healthcare institutions in Nigeria.
