A group under the umbrella body of the Nasiriya Movement has called on the Federal Government to ensure the continuous remand of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, pending the aftermath of investigations and trial over the alleged financial
The call was made on Thursday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Kaduna, where the convener of the group, Shehu Mohammed, addressed journalists.
Mohammed said the demand became necessary following allegations that the former governor is being investigated for the alleged misappropriation of over N400 billion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)
According to him, the alleged diversion of funds deprived Kaduna State residents of basic infrastructure and essential services, including healthcare
“For the over four hundred billion naira he is being investigated for, he should be made to pay because the act deprived Kaduna State and its people of basic infrastructure. Some people died without access to medicare.” Mohammed alleged
He further accused the former governor of disregarding human rights and the rule of law during his tenure, alleging that civil servants were sacked without due process or compensation
The group also urged the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate him over allegations of phone tapping involving the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the alleged misappropriation of state funds
It would be recalled that the former governor was reportedly arrested last Monday and is facing charges bordering on cybercrime and embezzlement of state funds by the EFCC, ICPC and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Nasiriya Movement maintained that keeping the former governor in remand until he is found guilty and sentenced would serve as a deterrent to public office holders accused of corruption
