The renowned PDP stalwart and women leader, Hajiya Mariya Waziri, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside thousands of her supporters in Kebbi State.
The Kebbi State Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, formally presented the decampees to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, Mariya Waziri said her decision to join the ruling party was informed by the purposeful and people-oriented leadership of Governor Nasir Idris, which, she noted, has brought growth, development and improved living conditions for the people of Kebbi State.
She explained that since she ventured into politics at the onset of the current democratic dispensation over 20 years ago, she had never changed her political party.
However, as a keen observer of governance, she said she could no longer ignore the tremendous and commendable achievements of Governor Idris, particularly in infrastructural development and the upliftment of the welfare of the populace.
According to her, these visible achievements inspired her decision to join the APC in order to contribute to strengthening and consolidating the successes already recorded by the present administration, together with her numerous supporters.
In his remarks, the APC State Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, commended Mariya Waziri for what he described as a bold and courageous decision.
He assured her and her supporters of equal rights, opportunities and privileges in the party, stressing that there would be no distinction between old and new members.
While receiving her into the APC fold, Governor Nasir Idris described Mariya Waziri as a prominent and widely sought-after woman politician, noting that several political parties, including the APC, had previously shown interest in her.
The Governor acknowledged that since the beginning of her political career, Mariya Waziri had remained steadfast in one party until now, when she chose to defect after recognizing the giant strides of his administration in improving the quality of life of the people.
He reiterated that democracy is about service and commitment to the welfare of the people, adding that his administration has so far fulfilled over 90 percent of its campaign promises.
He said Mariya Waziri’s decision to join the APC was a recognition of these achievements.
Governor Idris assured her of full integration into the party and pledged that his administration would carry her along in all aspects of development, while guaranteeing her equal treatment, rights and privileges within the APC.
