A Man with a Big Heart
By Usman Mohammed Binji
Chairman NUJ Sokoto State council
Aliyu Magatakarda Wammakko represents Sokoto North Senatorial District in Nigeria’s Senate. Over the years, he has earned a reputation not only as a politician but as a leader deeply connected to his people. Known for his philanthropic activities and close interaction with ordinary citizens, he is widely regarded in Sokoto State as a man committed to development and the welfare of his people.
One of the qualities that distinguishes Senator Wammakko is his humility. Despite his political stature, he remains accessible.
He attends community gatherings, religious functions, and social events, where he freely interacts with people from all walks of life.
He listens attentively to their concerns and, where possible, takes practical steps to address their needs. This approachable nature has endeared him to many across the state.
His political journey reflects resilience and determination. In 2007, he was elected Governor of Sokoto State, serving two terms with a focus on infrastructural development, healthcare delivery, education, youth and women empowerment, and agricultural advancement.
Many roads were constructed, schools upgraded, and initiatives introduced to improve livelihoods during his administration.
In 2015, he was elected to the Senate to represent Sokoto North Senatorial District, and in 2023, he was re-elected for another term, reaffirming the confidence his constituents continue to place in him.
Education remains one of his most notable areas of impact. Through scholarship programmes, he has supported many indigent students from Sokoto State to pursue studies both within Nigeria and abroad.
For many families, these opportunities have transformed lives and opened doors that once seemed closed.
Though a man of few words, Senator Wammakko is widely seen as firm and resolute. His political strength has been evident over the years, particularly in his contests with prominent figures such as Attahiru Bafarawa and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. His ability to navigate complex political landscapes has shaped Sokoto’s political history since 1999.
Having a big heart means showing compassion, generosity, and empathy. It means being willing to uplift others and stand by them in times of need. Judging by his political antecedents and his long-standing relationship with the grassroots, it is fitting to describe Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammakko as a man with a big heart.
Overall, he remains a respected political figure whose contributions have left a lasting imprint on Sokoto State and Nigeria at large. We pray that Almighty God grants him good health, long life, and continued strength to keep putting smiles on the faces of the people of Sokoto and beyond.
