The Sokoto state Zakat and Endowment Agency (SOZEA) on Saturday collected five cows and one goat as livestock Zakat from the farm of Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC- Sokoto), in the state.
Malam Lawal Maidoki, Chairman of the agency, who led other officials during the exercise, said the collection marks the 11th consecutive year the farm has fulfilled the obligation.
According to Maidoki, Wamakko has consistently reminded the agency of the annual obligation and has directed that the collection should always be carried out promptly when due, without any form of interference.
He explained that the agency deliberately invites students and stakeholders to witness the exercise in order to educate society on the practical aspects of Zakat and encourage future compliance with the injunction of Allah.
“I want to inform you that the exercise has remained successful and productive.
“We are confident that the effort is impressive and remains a strong source of knowledge enhancement for all of us, as well as the best way to protect, increase and bless the owner’s wealth,” he said.
Maidoki appreciated the Sokoto State Government and Wamakko for their sustained support to Islam and the Muslim community, not only in Sokoto but across the country.
In his remarks, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, Wazirin Gwandu of Kebbi State, commended the exercise, describing it as a commitment to fulfilling the commandment of Allah in Islam.
Umar thanked SOZEA for the initiative and for involving students in the exercise, emphasising that it remains a practical resource to support their academic pursuits.
He prayed for Wamakko for his dedication in fulfilling the commandment and for all those who supported the process.
Also commenting, Malam Ahmad Sani, Chairman of the Zakat and Waqf Board, Katsina state, appreciated SOZEA for the gesture.
Sani said the proper fulfillment of Zakat and Waqf would reduce overdependence on government, eradicate poverty not only in northern Nigeria but across the country, and curb begging in society.
He urged philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to do more in supporting the needy and ensure investments are directed appropriately.
Speaking further, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu (APC–Yabo), Chairman of the Sokoto State House of Assembly Committee on Religious Affairs, stressed the need for greater student involvement in Zakat activities.
Shehu commended SOZEA staff for their dedication to enlightening the public on the importance of Zakat and Waqf, while also appreciating Wamakko for leading by example.
He restated the State Assembly’s commitment to support initiatives aimed at improving leadership and the living conditions of citizens.
Responding, Wamakko, represented by Alhaji Muhammad Gidado, District Head of Gidan Bubu, expressed appreciation for the exercise, describing Zakat as an obligation rather than a privilege.
Earlier, Malam Dan-Gande Wamakko explained the procedures for collecting livestock Zakat in Islam and highlighted the expected benefits for those who fulfill it properly.
