SOZEA Calls On Philanthropists To Give WAQ
The Sokoto State Zakat and Endowment Agency (SOZEA) has emphasised the need for philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to embrace Waqf as a legacy for sustainable development.
The Chairman Zakat and Endowment, Malam Lawal Maidoki, made the appeal while addressing journalists as part of the 2026 Zakat and Waqf Week celebration in Sokoto recently.
According to Maidoki, the week-long celebration is a collective decision by all Zakat and Waqf institutions in Nigeria.
“The ongoing SOZEA Zakat and Waqf Week will feature the collection and distribution of livestock Zakat, as well as other important activities.
“This is aimed at strengthening Zakat and Waqf administration and awareness in Sokoto state,” he said.
He added that Zakat and Waqf, being two powerful institutions of Islamic socio-economic development, are divinely ordained mechanisms for poverty alleviation, social justice, wealth redistribution and sustainable community development.
Maidoki said the week’s activities were designed to encourage eligible Muslims to fulfil their Zakat obligations correctly and promptly, while also promoting transparency, accountability and public confidence.
“This is also to deepen public understanding of Waqf as a sustainable tool for social development and ensure fair and impactful distribution of Zakat,” he stated.
While appreciating Gov. Ahmed Aliyu and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, Maidoki called on religious leaders and the media to continue supporting awareness and education on Zakat and Waqf.
He thanked all stakeholders for their sustained support to the agency, stressing that Zakat and Waqf are not merely acts of worship but instruments for societal transformation.
