Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Tackle Insecurity at 61st Argungu Fishing Festival

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to strengthen the fight against insecurity across the country.
The President made the declaration at the closing ceremony of the 61st International Argungu Fishing and Cultural Festival held at the Matan Fada Arena in Argungu Emirate, Kebbi State.
According to him, remarkable progress has been recorded in restoring peace and stability through the collaboration of traditional rulers, improved intelligence gathering and active community engagement. He assured Nigerians that efforts would be intensified to sustain the gains achieved so far.
President Tinubu commended Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State for reviving the historic festival, which had been suspended for some years. He pledged the Federal Government’s continued support toward promoting cultural heritage, tourism development, national unity and peaceful coexistence.
In his address,
Governor Nasir Idris said the revival of the festival was aimed at reinforcing its status as a symbol of unity, cultural pride and economic opportunity for Kebbi State and Nigeria as a whole.
He outlined several achievements of his administration across critical sectors of development and thanked the President for honouring the state with his presence.
Earlier, the Emir of Argungu, Dr. Isma’il Muhammad Mera, explained that the festival, which began over 83 years ago, was established to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Argungu Emirate.
He disclosed that more than 50,000 fishermen from across the country participated in this year’s competition.
Meanwhile, Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 edition of the fishing competition. Abdullahi Garba from Argungu Local Government came second, while Dan Lanso from Jega Local Government secured third position.
Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu donated a Toyota saloon car and N1 million to the overall winner, as well as a Hajj seat to the second-place winner. The prizes were in addition to other rewards announced by the festival committee.
