ABEP Project Commended For Expanding Access Education In Sokoto Communities.
The Permanent Secretary of the Sokoto State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Sanusi Aliyu Binji, has commended the Accelerating Basic Education Programme (ABEP) for expanding access to education in communities across the state.
Dr. Binji gave the commendation while receiving the ABEP project team, led by Project Coordinator Mr. Joseph Julius, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry.
Speaking during the visit ,Julius highlighted the programme’s collaboration with the state government to improve education access, particularly for children in rural and nomadic communities. He noted that the EU funded initiative, implemented by Plan International, focuses on integrating its interventions into the state’s education strategies to ensure sustainability.
According to him, ABEP has established several learning centres across the state, provided teaching and learning materials, and created safe and inclusive spaces for children previously excluded from formal education.
He disclosed that more than 2,000 children have been successfully mainstreamed into formal schools, while over 21,000 learners are currently enrolled in ABEP supported learning centres across Tambuwal, Sokoto North, Bodinga, and Gwadabawa local government areas.
Julius further explained that the programme currently works with 240 indigenous learning facilitators, who deliver ABEP’s curriculum and help address socio-economic barriers that prevent children especially girls and nomadic learners—from accessing education.
In his response, Dr. Binji praised the programme’s impact and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining and expanding its achievements.
He said the Sokoto State Government, under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu, remains committed to ensuring that all children, particularly those from marginalized communities, have access to quality education.
The Permanent Secretary also thanked the ABEP team for their continued partnership and support to the state’s education sector.
