C4SD Strengthen Media Capacity on Health Supply Chain in Kaduna

Gbenga Oloniyo, Kaduna

The Capacity 4 Sustainable Development (C4SD) on Wednesday organised a training workshop for journalists in Kaduna State on healthcare supply chain systems and effective reporting of public health interventions, aimed at strengthening awareness and accountability in the health sector

The training, held in Kaduna in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents' Chapel, provided insights into the Strengthening Integrated Last Mile Delivery and Supply Visibility (SILMD & SV) project being implemented in the state

Speaking at the event, the C4SD Programme Evidence Lead, Nasir Muhammed, said the project is funded by the Gates Foundation and is being implemented in Kaduna and Kano states to improve healthcare supply chains and access to essential health commodities

He explained that the project covers all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State and is being implemented in partnership with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, and Kaduna State Health Supplies Management Agency (KADHSMA)

According to Muhammed, the initiative focuses on strengthening integrated warehouses, improving inventory management, and enhancing last-mile delivery systems to ensure the availability of medicines and family planning commodities in public health facilities

He urged journalists to support efforts to raise public awareness that family planning commodities are available free of charge in government health facilities across the state

“As journalists, you have an important role to promote public awareness and strengthen development initiatives through adequate reporting,” he said

Also speaking, the C4SD State Programme Lead, Edmund Dambo, noted that the training was designed to deepen journalists’ understanding of health supply chain systems and improve media engagement in public health interventions

Dambo highlighted the consequences of weak supply chain systems, including preventable deaths due to medicine stock-outs, wastage from expired or damaged products, patient mistrust, and increased disease burden. He identified poor road infrastructure, inadequate transportation, weak data reporting systems, limited cold-chain capacity, and insecurity as major challenges affecting effective last-mile delivery of health commodities

He further stressed that a strong health supply chain is critical to achieving universal health coverage, adding that accurate data collection, proper storage practices, and digital tools such as the Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) are essential for efficient healthcare delivery

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended the organisers, describing the training as timely and important

“Journalists occupy a strategic position in shaping public understanding, promoting accountability, and amplifying developmental initiatives that directly impact the lives of citizens. The health sector remains one of the most sensitive and vital areas of governance, and projects that seek to improve supply chain visibility and last-mile delivery of health commodities deserve adequate media attention and professional reportage,” he said

Alabelewe added that the training would equip journalists with the knowledge required to report health and development issues accurately and responsibly

Similarly, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mariam Ahmadu-Suka, appreciated C4SD for organising the workshop, noting that it had enhanced participants’ understanding of healthcare supply chain systems

“As journalists, we have an important role in promoting public awareness and supporting development initiatives through accurate and responsible reporting. This training has strengthened our capacity to report health interventions effectively,” she said
