Crisis Rocks ACF As NEC Suspends BOT Chairman Over Alleged Misconduct
Gbenga Oloniyo, Kaduna
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has suspended the Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT), Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, over allegations of misconduct and multiple infections
The decision was taken at a NEC meeting presided over by its Chairman, Mr. Mick Othman (SAN)
This development was disclosed to journalists in Kaduna by the Chairman of the forum’s Ethics and Conduct Committee, Professor Nuhu Jamu.
According to him, the suspension followed a written petition submitted by a member of the forum, accusing the BOT Chairman of multiple infractions
He explained that a committee was set up to investigate the allegations levelled against the BOT chairman
He also noted that due to the seriousness of the claims and time constraints, the committee adopted an expedited review process while ensuring fairness
Jamu further revealed that the BOT Chairman was formally notified of the allegations and requested to respond within a stipulated timeframe but failed to comply
The committee, he said, identified several breaches of the forum’s constitutional provisions, particularly acts of usurpation
“One of the notable incidents was the cancellation of a meeting convened by the forum’s Chairman, while the Chairman has the authority to call meetings, the BOT Chairman lacks the constitutional backing to cancel them,” he said
He also raised concerns over the participation of individuals whose membership status could not be verified, warning that allowing non-members to partake in deliberations could undermine the credibility of decisions reached
Financial management, however, emerged as the most critical issue
Jamu disclosed that funds from the forum’s endowment were allegedly transferred between accounts under unclear circumstances, adding that the BOT Chairman reportedly became a signatory to the accounts after initiating the transfers, raising serious governance concerns
Describing the situation as alarming, the committee recommended a comprehensive forensic audit to trace the movement of funds and determine whether any misappropriation occurred. It further advised that any improperly used funds should be recovered
He emphasized that the suspension of the BOT Chairman was not punitive but aimed at ensuring an impartial investigation
“This is about preserving the integrity of the forum,” Jamu said. “We need unrestricted access to financial and administrative records to establish the facts and ensure accountability.”
He assured members that the process would strictly adhere to the principles of natural justice, giving all parties the opportunity to present their case
The forum is expected to review the committee’s recommendations and take a final decision in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Mohammed Baba, confirmed that delegates from 18 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory attended the meeting
He added that the NEC passed a vote of confidence on its Chairman and Secretary-General, Alhaji Aliyu Murtala, while a vote of no confidence was passed on the BOT Chairman.
