A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Shehu Usman Bawa has emerged as the governorship candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State ahead of the forthcoming general elections

Bawa was declared winner of the party’s primary election held in Kaduna on Monday by the Returning Officer, Professor Ibrahim Lawal, after securing a total of 124,170 votes to defeat his closest rival, Haruna Kajuru, who polled 22,010 votes in a wide margin

In his acceptance speech shortly after his declaration, Bawa described his emergence as “a defining moment” in the political history of Kaduna State

He pledged to unite party members and reposition the state if elected governor in 2027

He expressed appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, women, youths, grassroots mobilisers, and supporters across the 23 local government areas of the state for their confidence in his candidature

“This victory is not for Hon. Usman Bawa alone. It is a victory for every struggling family seeking hope, every unemployed youth seeking opportunity, every farmer praying for security, every trader longing for economic stability, and every citizen dreaming of a peaceful and prosperous Kaduna State,” he said

The PDP flagbearer extended an olive branch to his opponent and his supporters, stressing that the contest was over and that the party must now focus on securing victory in the governorship election.

Bawa, however, lamented the persistent security challenges in the state, particularly banditry, kidnappin, and attacks on communities, noting that the situation has created fear among residents and negatively impacted economic activities in the State

“This painful reality cannot continue,” he declared

He assured that if elected governor in 2027, his administration would prioritise peace and security through collaboration with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, vigilante groups, and local communities

Bawa also pledged to strengthen community policing initiatives, improve intelligence gathering, and provide adequate logistical support to security agencies to tackle insecurity across the state.
