The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with the Qatar Charity Foundation, has distributed Braille Qur’ans, white canes, food items, cash assistance and working kits to blind and visually impaired persons across the state.

Speaking during the event held in Sokoto, Governor Ahmad Aliyu described the intervention as a significant step towards improving the welfare, education and social inclusion of persons living with disabilities, particularly the blind and visually impaired community.

The Governor said about 450 beneficiaries received Braille Qur’ans, 50kg bags of rice, cash assistance of ₦50,000 each and various working kits under the humanitarian initiative supported by the Government of Qatar.
He explained that the donation of Braille Qur’ans would enhance Islamic education and spiritual development among visually impaired persons, while the white canes would improve mobility, confidence and independent living.

Governor Aliyu commended the Qatar Charity Foundation for what he described as a compassionate and impactful intervention aimed at supporting vulnerable members of society.

“Our administration remains committed to promoting the welfare, education and empowerment of persons living with disabilities across Sokoto State,” the Governor stated.
He disclosed that since assuming office, his administration had introduced several programmes targeted at improving the wellbeing of physically challenged persons in the state.

According to him, the government distributed 1,000 handcycles to physically challenged persons, provided food items and cash assistance to encourage self-reliance, and increased monthly allowances for persons with disabilities from ₦6,500 to ₦10,000.

The Governor added that over 6,179 physically challenged persons are currently benefiting from the monthly allowance scheme.

He further highlighted other interventions of the administration to include the donation of a brand new 18-seater bus to persons with disabilities, distribution of textile materials during Eid-el-Fitr and the establishment of Ramadan feeding centres across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Governor Aliyu also announced plans by the state government to renovate and equip Abdulrashid Adisa Raji Special School as part of efforts to strengthen special education in the state.
He revealed that another special school dedicated to blind and visually impaired children would soon be established to provide them with quality education and specialised support.
The Governor called on well-meaning individuals and organisations to complement government efforts by supporting the education and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Speaking earlier, the representative of His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Galadiman Gari, Aliyu Attahiru  commended the Sokoto State Government for its commitment to humanitarian services and support for vulnerable groups.

The Sultan  asured support of the traditional institution to Governor Ahmad Aliyu and urged him to sustain the developmental strides of his administration.

Officials of the Qatar Foundation described the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusion, compassion and support for persons living with disabilities.

Beneficiaries at the event expressed gratitude to the Sokoto State Government and the Qatar Charity Foundation for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.
