Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has flagged off the construction of 100 housing units for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Rabah Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration's commitment to providing lasting support for victims of insecurity and improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens.

The housing project, which is part of the state's humanitarian and recovery efforts, is expected to provide permanent shelter for families displaced by banditry and other security challenges in the area.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Aliyu said many communities in Rabah had been severely affected by persistent attacks, forcing residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge in temporary camps and public facilities.

He said the state government had consistently supported displaced persons through the provision of food items and financial assistance, adding that the housing scheme represented a more sustainable solution to their plight.

"We are all aware of the security challenges that have affected some communities in Rabah Local Government Area, leading to the displacement of many families. As a responsible and compassionate government, we have consistently visited these communities, identified with their plight, and provided food items as well as financial assistance to ease their hardship," the governor said.
According to him, the project is aimed at restoring dignity to displaced families and creating an enabling environment for them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

Aliyu directed the contractor handling the project to ensure strict compliance with approved specifications and complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.

"The government will not tolerate substandard work. The contractor must ensure that the project is executed according to the highest quality standards and delivered on schedule," he warned.

The governor reiterated his administration's commitment to implementing policies and programmes that improve the living conditions of citizens, particularly vulnerable groups affected by insecurity.

He also appealed to corporate organisations and development partners to complement government efforts by supporting humanitarian interventions across the state.

Aliyu assured residents that both the federal and state governments were intensifying efforts to restore peace and security in affected communities and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to addressing insecurity nationwide.

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo described the housing project as a landmark intervention that demonstrates the Sokoto State Government's commitment to social welfare, human development and inclusive governance.

He said the initiative would provide safety, dignity and hope to displaced persons while also serving as a platform for rehabilitation, empowerment and social reintegration.
"The establishment of this housing project for internally displaced persons is a clear demonstration of the government's determination to provide safety, dignity and hope for citizens affected by displacement and other challenges," Goronyo said.

The minister noted that the project aligns with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and complements federal efforts aimed at promoting security, economic empowerment and sustainable development.

He urged residents of Sokoto State to continue supporting the administration's programmes and policies to ensure their success.

How ever, the Representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Asharaf Usman also commended Governor Aliyu for strengthening partnerships aimed at promoting peacebuilding, resilience and development across the North-West.

The organisation expressed appreciation for the Sokoto State Government's commitment to the North-West Stabilisation Facility and acknowledged the Government of Germany for providing an additional €3 million to expand ongoing interventions in the region.

According to UNDP, its programmes have already improved access to water, restored livelihoods, strengthened local economies and enhanced community-based conflict resolution mechanisms in affected communities.

The agency noted that Rabah remains one of the areas most impacted by insecurity, displacement and destruction of farmlands, making continued intervention critical.

It explained that the stabilisation initiative seeks to address the root causes of insecurity through an integrated approach that combines peacebuilding, livelihood support, resilience-building and sustainable development.

"The North-West Stabilisation Facility is founded on a simple but powerful principle: peace cannot be sustained through security measures alone. Lasting peace is achieved when people have access to opportunities, essential services and hope for a better future," the UNDP representative said.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Sokoto State Government and other partners to promote stability, recovery and long-term development in communities affected by insecurity.

The housing project and stabilisation initiative are expected to contribute significantly to rehabilitation, social reintegration and economic recovery efforts in Rabah and other affected parts of Sokoto State.
