The Kaduna State House of Assembly (KDHA) has passed a bill seeking to establish the Kaduna State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCDC), a move aimed at strengthening public health systems across the state
The bill, titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCDC) and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2026,” was passed on Tuesday during plenary, presided over by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman
The proposed centre is designed to enhance the prevention, detection, and control of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, while also improving the state’s response to public health emergencies
Speaking on the development, the Speaker noted that the establishment of the KDCDC would provide a coordinated framework for disease surveillance, outbreak response, and emergency preparedness in Kaduna State
The passage of the bill followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Joint Committee on Health and Judiciary, chaired by Hon. Haruna Barnabas, representing Kauru/Chawai Constituency
Presenting the report, Barnabas explained that the legislation would create a solid legal and institutional framework to effectively address diseases and other health emergencies, thereby strengthening the overall healthcare system in the state
The move is widely regarded as a significant step by the Assembly to bolster public health infrastructure and ensure timely and efficient responses to disease outbreaks and health-related crises
