THE WISDOM OF YESTERDAY, THE INVESTMENT OF TODAY
THE WISDOM OF YESTERDAY, THE INVESTMENT OF TODAY

Education remains one of the most enduring investments any society can make. While roads, bridges and other physical infrastructure are visible symbols of development, it is education that produces the human capital required to sustain growth, drive innovation and provide leadership for future generations.
Across the world, societies that have attained remarkable progress have done so by placing higher education at the centre of their development agenda.
Universities occupy a unique position in this regard. Beyond awarding degrees, they serve as centres of research, innovation, critical thinking and manpower development. They nurture professionals who contribute to every sector of society including healthcare, agriculture, engineering, education, public administration and business. It is therefore difficult to imagine sustainable development without strong institutions of higher learning.
It was this understanding and foresight that informed the decision of the administration of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko to establish a state-owned university in Sokoto. At the time, some critics questioned the necessity of creating another university, arguing that the state had other pressing priorities. Others doubted the capacity of the state to sustain such an ambitious institution.
However, leadership is often defined by the ability to see opportunities beyond present circumstances. The establishment of Sokoto State University was not merely a political project but a strategic investment in the future of the state. It was conceived to expand access to higher education, reduce the burden on students seeking admission into overcrowded institutions and create a platform for producing the skilled workforce needed for the state's development.
Today, many of those who once expressed reservations have begun to appreciate the wisdom behind that decision. The university has steadily grown into an important centre of learning, producing graduates who are contributing meaningfully to society. It has also generated employment opportunities, stimulated economic activities and enhanced the educational profile of Sokoto State.
The success and sustainability of any institution, however, depend largely on continuous support from government. Recognising this reality, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has demonstrated a firm commitment to strengthening not only Sokoto State University but all tertiary institutions owned by the state. The administration has consistently provided the necessary support to ensure that these institutions evolve into centres of academic excellence capable of competing with their counterparts across the country.
The latest demonstration of this commitment is Governor Ahmed Aliyu's approval of a substantial 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance for lecturers in Sokoto State University and Shehu Shagari University of Education. This landmark decision has understandably attracted commendation from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which acknowledged the government's responsiveness to the needs of academic personnel.
This intervention goes beyond financial considerations. Academic excellence is built on motivated and productive lecturers who have access to the tools required for teaching, research and professional development. By increasing the allowance, the government is empowering lecturers to improve their academic output, engage in more meaningful research and contribute more effectively to knowledge creation.
The beneficiaries of this policy are not only the lecturers themselves but also the students and the wider society. Better motivated lecturers are more likely to deliver quality instruction, mentor students effectively and attract research opportunities that can address societal challenges. The result is an improved learning environment and graduates who are better equipped to meet the demands of an increasingly competitive world.
The decision also sends a powerful message about the value the government places on education. It demonstrates an understanding that universities flourish when academic staff are supported and encouraged to perform at their highest level. Such policies help strengthen institutional stability, improve staff morale and enhance the reputation of the state's tertiary institutions.
Viewed against the backdrop of the visionary decision to establish a state university during the administration of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Governor Ahmed Aliyu's latest intervention represents a continuation of a noble educational legacy. While one administration laid the foundation, the present administration is strengthening the structure and ensuring that it remains capable of serving future generations.
The journey from establishing a university to nurturing it into a respected centre of learning requires patience, commitment and sustained investment. Sokoto State appears to be following that path. The increasing support being extended to higher institutions reflects a recognition that education remains the most reliable instrument for social transformation and economic advancement.
The story of Sokoto State University demonstrates an important lesson in governance: visionary projects often require time before their full value becomes apparent. What began as a bold decision years ago has matured into an institution that is contributing significantly to the educational and socio-economic development of the state. The continued support being provided today ensures that the gains already recorded will be preserved and expanded.
As the state continues to invest in its universities and other tertiary institutions, the long term benefits will become even more evident. Future generations will look back and recognise that the decisions taken by visionary leaders to establish, support and strengthen institutions of higher learning played a decisive role in shaping the progress and prosperity of Sokoto State.
