UNICEF, EU Boost Sokoto Education Data System With 79 Tablets As Commissioner Flags Off School Census
The Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Sokoto State, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala, on Monday, June 22, 2026, flagged off the 2025/2026 Annual School Census (ASC) Planning Meeting held at Sokoto Guest Inn Hotel, Sokoto.
Represented by the Executive Chairman of the Teachers Service Board, Professor Mustafa Tukur Namakka, the Commissioner expressed appreciation to UNICEF and the European Union (EU) for their continued support, funding, and provision of the necessary equipment to ensure the successful conduct of the Annual School Census exercise across the state.
Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala made the remarks during the official flag off ceremony, where he formally received 79 Galaxy Tablets from UNICEF, funded by the European Union, to facilitate the commencement of the 2025/2026 Annual School Census exercise.
The Commissioner noted that the provision of the tablets demonstrates the commitment of UNICEF and the European Union to strengthening educational planning and data management in Sokoto State.
He assured the development partners that the equipment would be utilized strictly for its intended purpose to improve data collection, analysis, and evidence based decision making in the education sector.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Chika Murtala Abubakar, welcomed participants and highlighted the objectives of the planning meeting, emphasizing the importance of accurate and reliable educational data for effective policy formulation and educational development.
Also speaking at the event, Beatrice Sababa, on behalf of UNICEF, reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting the Sokoto State Government in strengthening educational planning and data management systems.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Sidi Almustapha; the representative of Plan International, Julius Joseph; and the representative of the AGILE Project, Suleiman Musa.
They commended the Ministry for its commitment to evidence based planning and pledged continued collaboration toward improving educational outcomes in the state.
The Head of the Education Management Information System (EMIS) under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Hafiz Ibrahim D/Daji, delivered two presentations.
The first focused on the background and progress of the Annual School Census in Sokoto State, while the second outlined the implementation strategy for the 2025/2026 Annual School Census and provided an overview of the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS).
In his closing remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Female Education Board, Shehu Aliyu, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and development partners for their contributions toward the successful planning of the exercise.
He called for continued cooperation among all participants to ensure the collection of accurate and comprehensive educational data across the state.
The Annual School Census remains a critical tool for educational planning, resource allocation, policy development, and monitoring of progress within the education sector.
